Before we jump into the math, you need to understand two key components:

Credit Hours (or Credits): This represents the weight of the class. A 3-credit college course affects your GPA more than a 1-credit lab.
Grade Points: This is the numerical value assigned to your letter grade. On a standard 4.0 scale, an 'A' is 4.0, a 'B' is 3.0, and so on.

Step 1: Convert Letter Grades to Grade Points

First, look at your transcript or report card. Convert each letter grade to its corresponding numerical value using the standard 4.0 scale:

A = 4.0
B = 3.0
C = 2.0
D = 1.0
F = 0.0

Step 2: Calculate Total Quality Points

For each class, multiply the Grade Points by the number of Credit Hours. This gives you the "Quality Points" for that specific class.

Example: You got an 'A' (4.0) in a 3-credit Psychology class.

Step 3: Add Them All Up

Now, add up all your Quality Points from all your classes. Then, add up all the total Credit Hours you attempted.

Step 4: Divide

Finally, divide your Total Quality Points by your Total Credit Hours.

Total Quality Points ÷ Total Credit Hours = GPA
